History of R&B Acres
We moved to Myrtle, Mississippi in 1978 and I was to manage a Mac Donald's Restaurant. Needless to say that all fell through. At that time, we had one daughter in the University of New Mexico, and another daughter in the University of Mississippi, one son in high school and one in grammar school, and no JOB!

In June of 1978, I was hired by Master-Bilt Products in the sales dept.

In 1980, Bea and I planted a half acre of Cardinal strawberries to supplement my income. We sold all the strawberries at our farm either by You Pick or We Pick. We increased our acreage yearly until we had 5 acres of strawberries, all with overhead irrigation. We also planted UC 157 Asparagus, which we sell at our farm today. By 1988, we were growing 5 acres of strawberries by the matted row method with no plastic or drip irrigation.

In 1993, I retired from Master-Bilt and worked the farm full time.

We did strawberry tours for school children on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and You Pick customers on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. In October, we sold pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, and Halloween craft items as well as school tours. That year, we had about 600 children visit the farm in October. By 1996, we had 4000 children visit the farm in October and I had my right knee replaced. That is the year we quit growing strawberries.

Today, Bea and I grow approximately 14 acres of pumpkins, have a store where we sell all kinds of crafts. We also sell honey, bake pies and have a maze for children. We have a nature trail, A petting zoo and have our own fire truck for the children to play. In 2000, we had 7000 children visit the farm. We give each child a hay ride to the pumpkin patch where they pick their own pumpkin. They also get a coloring book on fire safety and school bus safety, and a drink and treat. They can bring their lunch an spend the rest of the day with us on the farm. We are open seven days a week in October.
